Behind the Photograph: Smallpox at Hoffman Island, New York

My curiosity about a photograph of quarantined immigrants led me to discover a pioneer in LGBTQ+ history.

I recently did some research on historical photographs on the website for the US Library of Congress when I came upon this image:
