I wrote something that's publishing on Wednesday. I went over the evidence for different interventions. You're right in that the problem is multifaceted. There will not be one solution to all of it, right?
But we can also distill these issues to their core. What makes people use drugs? And if they use, why do some become dependent/addicted and others not? What's the difference between the former ESPN CEO who was able to use cocaine on the weekends and be functional, and the person who used once and became so addicted that they lost everything?
I am willing to bet that any well-to-do neighborhood in the US has its fair share of people who use substances. They just have "safe injection/consumption" sites within their own homes. Or the substance they use is not criminalized to the point where they need to hide it, will lose their jobs over it, or can't get it other than by putting themselves in danger.
Again, lots to talk about, but I'm glad these discussions are happening more and more.
