If the Republican wins, we would have THREE elections in this century when the popular vote goes to the loser: 2000, 2016, and 2024. (And only once, in 2004, would the majority of the American electorate have voted for a Republican.) It shows how the Electoral College is seemingly no longer representative of the will of the people of the whole country. There might be cons to eliminating the Electoral College, but I don't see many. Even the current argument that large and populous states would have more power over small and rural (usually more conservative) states should be attractive to people in Florida and Texas, the two fastest-growing states with heavy conservative influence.
