Over the last 18 months, I sat down and wrote a series of blog posts about Public Health. I was going to post them here on Medium, but several friends and colleagues convinced me to post them on Substack. They also suggested I charge $5 per month to subscribers to have access to the “lessons” in the blog posts. It seemed like a good idea.

But I also wanted to reach everyone, and not hold everything behind a paywall. So I came up with the idea of the Public Health Night School with lessons that would be for subcribers, but lots of “extra” blog posts open for everyone. I think that hit the sweet spot on not wanting everything behind a paywall, but still getting some remuneration for my time putting it all together.

Then I had the idea of categorizing the blog posts into “courses.” This January, I stared with explaining the science of epidemiology, the study of that which happens to people. It is a 13 (or so) series of blog posts explaining the ins and outs of “epi” in a way that could be read by most people and understood by almost all of them. Starting in April, I will shift over to blog posts on biostatistics, the mathematics behind understanding public health data. Later in the year, I’ll do a series of blog posts (a course) on vaccine science, then Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and more.

And, throughout, I’ll be using and posting lots of R code for the readers (“students”) to follow along and learn some data analysis and coding.

It’s nothing complicated, and aimed at introducing you to the fascinating world of Public Health. So check out the project here, and read the About Page here. If you find it interesting, subscribe for free. And if you want to have more interaction and discuss the topics with me, then please consider subscribing for any of the paid tiers. It’s good coffee money for me to keep writing over there, and over here.
