The Absolute Horror of Writer’s Block
Writing can be automatic, spontaneous, or planned. But even the best laid plans…
I was diagnosed with hypergraphia (the temporal lobe kind) when I was in college. I won’t take you into the details of how I was diagnosed, but the diagnosis made a lot of sense. You see, I always loved to create world upon world in writing. It was my artistic superpower. While others could generate songs, poetry, or beautiful paintings, I could write.
That doesn’t mean I was a good writer then or am now. In fact, I have a lot to learn about writing. I still make mistakes here and there in the flow and readability of my stories. With Spanish as my first language, writing in English can be complicated. Most of my thoughts are in Spanish, so I’m auto-translating everything as I write.
Then again, I’ve been using English as my primary communication language for a long time, in school, at work, at home. So Spanish writing can also be complicated, especially with all the rules on where to accent certain words, or how to spell them differently in Mexican Spanish (the Spanish I grew up with) versus original Spanish, versus Latin American Spanish. Nevertheless, I love writing.
