There Are Many Barriers to Equity in Coding

Access to learning and working in software development and data analysis faces many obstacles. But I’m hopeful that people can overcome them.

As I wrote my last post, I realized that many people will be left out of the data analysis and software development revolution coming our way with AI. While AI can be a fantastic tool for learning to code and bringing an idea to life, so to speak, AI is expensive right now. As I’m writing this in March 2024, most of the big and effective AI tools are available at around $20 a month. For many people around the world, those $20 are a good chunk of their monthly income.

Coding is becoming an essential skill, like reading and writing. The proliferation of technology has led to this, and people who do not learn how to code will be at a disadvantage in the job market in the foreseeable future. However, despite its growing importance, several barriers prevent people from accessing and mastering this skill. From language barriers to the cost of technology…
