The long and short of it is this:
- Sensitivity is the probability that the test will detect the true cases of the disease.
- Specificity is the probability that the test will detect the true healthy people, those without the disease.
- Positive predictive value is the probability that a positive test is truly positive.
- Negative predictive value is the probability that a negative test is someone without the disease.
- Prevalence is the number of cases of the disease in the population being tested, divided by the total population being tested.
- The higher the prevalence, the higher the positive predictive value. For example: A positive test for influenza is more likely to be a true case of influenza in the middle of flu season. When…
